When content cannot be distinguished by the values of at least one metadata key or by the title of a document, Fluid Topics displays clustered results in a variant drawer.
Example
The following example shows four variants of the Time Machine User Guide
:
Document title | Audience | Version |
---|---|---|
Introduction to Time Machines |
Novice |
1.0 |
Introduction to Time Machines |
Expert |
1.0 |
Introduction to Time Machines |
Novice |
2.0 |
Introduction to Time Machines |
Expert |
2.0 |
Since the Audience
and Version
metadata keys both have two possible values, neither can be used to distinguish variants. This is why Fluid Topics makes multiple facets available in a drawer that let users refine their search.
The Choose among x variants button appears in the Search page as follows:
The tags that appear under the title of the document provide an at-a-glance view of the document's metadata. Tags with dotted circles indicate that other values are available for this metadata key. In the example above, the Novice
tag has a dotted circle because the Expert
value is also available.
Selecting the Choose among x variants button opens the variant drawer as follows:
Where:
- A list of all the variants of the book, article or topic matching the query.
- The metadata keys and associated values shared by all the variants of the book, article or topic matching the query.
- Filters to select metadata values that dynamically refine the results listed on the right.
