To configure a multilingual taxonomy, prepare a file as follows:

  1. In row 1 column A, define the language of the content to which the vocabulary applies by entering a value for the afs:lang metadata.

The afs:lang value must be an ISO 639-1 language designator in lowercase, and an ISO 3166-1 region designator in uppercase, separated by a hyphen. For example: afs:lang=en-US or afs:lang=fr-FR.

  2. In row 2 column A, enter a generic term (also known as hypernym).

  3. Enter synonyms for the generic term in the same row, with one synonym per column.

  4. In row 3, enter a specific term (also known as hyponym) related to the generic term.

  5. Enter synonyms for the specific term in the same row, with one synonym per column.

  6. Continue developing the taxonomy with generic and specific terms and their synonyms.

  7. To add another language, skip at least one line after the first taxonomy, then define the language in column A.

  8. Add the translations of all terms defined for the first language.

The following example is an example file defining a taxonomy for a corpus of documents in American English and French:

afs:lang=en-US
means of transportation means of travel means of locomotion
car automobile
four-wheel drive SUV
convertible
motorcycle motorbike
plane aircraft
fixed-wing
monoplane
biplane
rotorcraft
helicopter
autogyro gyroplane
cyclogyro cyclocopter
afs:lang=fr-FR
moyen de transport moyen de déplacement moyen de locomotion

avion aéroplane
aéronef à voilure fixe
avion monoplan
avion biplan
giravion
hélicoptère
autogire autogyre
cyclogyre cyclocoptère

Fluid Topics does not consider a term's translation to be its synonym. In other words, "plane" in English is a translation of "avion" in French, and the two terms are not synonyms.
