Configuring a multilingual taxonomy consists in following the same steps as for configuring a monolingual taxonomy in a single language and repeating these steps for each additional language as follows:
- In row 1 column A, define the language of the content to which the first taxonomy will apply by entering a value for the afs:lang metadata. The value must be composed of an ISO 639-1 language designator in lowercase and an ISO 3166-1 region designator in uppercase, separated by a hyphen.
- In row 2 column A, enter a generic term.
- Enter synonyms for the generic term in the same row, with one synonym per column.
- In row 3, enter a specific term related to the generic term.
- Enter synonyms for the specific term in the same row, with one synonym per column.
- Continue developing the taxonomy with generic and specific terms and their synonyms.
- To add another language, skip at least one line after the first taxonomy, then define the language in column A.
- Add the translations of all terms defined for the first language.

Fluid Topics does not consider a term's translation to be its synonym. In other words, "plane" in English is a translation of "avion" in French, and the two terms are not synonyms.
