Selecting the switch icon to the left of a metadata key listed in the Document metadata section of the Reader page administration interface displays the value for that key as a Switch to relatives menu in the Title bar of the Reader page.

The switch icon only affects documents with a relative (another document that shares the metadata) and then only when the shared metadata is selected as a pivot. If these conditions are not met, the metadata key is displayed as a static tag even if the switch icon is selected.

Example

The following image shows the Reader page of a portal where an administrator selected the switch icon for the Version metadata key:

Document metadata as a Switch to relatives menu

Selecting metadata for the Switch to relatives feature

When selecting the switch icon next to more than one metadata, switching is possible if only one of the selected metadata (the metadata for which the switch icon is selected) is different between the two relatives.

Example

An administrator selects the switch icon next to the metadata ft:locale and version but not next to the metadata publicationDate.

Four documents share the same pivot metadata and have the following values:

Document

ft:locale

version

publicationDate

Doc 1

fr:FR

v1

date 1

Doc 2

fr:FR

v2

date 2

Doc 3

en:US

v1

date 3

Doc 4

en:US

v2

date 4

Fluid Topics only displays menus for the metadata for which the switch icon is selected (ft:locale and version). All other metadata is not taken into account due to the known limitation described above. The resulting possible switches are as follows:

Doc 1

Doc 2

Doc 3

Doc 4

Doc 1

  • It is possible to switch from Doc 1 to Doc 2 because only the value for the version metadata is different.
  • It is possible to switch from Doc 1 to Doc 3 because only the value for the ft:locale metadata is different.
  • It is possible to switch from Doc 2 to Doc 4 because only the value for the ft:locale metadata is different.
  • It is possible to switch from Doc 3 to Doc 4 because only the value for the version metadata is different.

If an administrator then selects the switch icon next to the metadata publicationDate, no menus are displayed because each document has two "dimensions" of potentially switchable metadata (ft:locale + publicationDate OR version + publicationDate). Fluid Topics supports no more than one dimension of switchable metadata.
